Serial console for Azure Virtual Machines with the new feature to restart the VM – Now Available
At last another most awaited feature is enabled now for the Azure VM, it now enables you to reboot your VM from within the console experience. This ability will help you if you want to reboot a stuck VM or enter the boot menu of your VM.
I have just tested it with one of the stuck VM where I was unable to RDP and it was showing below error. I need to reboot this VM
I went to the serial console
It has opened the following window
There are few more commands which you can see below
Next is to type the restart command and your VM will be restarted from the Console. And it’s very fast.

I checked on Ubuntu 18.04.2 on Azure, but the restart command doesn’t work by default. You have to install the package by installing it “sudo apt install restartd” and configure some file to make sure the restart command is working.
You can use the command “reboot” to restart the server.
Having read this I thought it was very informative. I appreciate you taking the time and energy
to put this information together. I once again find myself
personally spending way too much time both reading and leaving comments.
But so what, it was still worth it!
